I was invited by the Old Operating Theatre and Herb Garret (OOT), London to make a new body of work. The Old Operating Theatre architecture and history generated the germ of an idea and I was further inspired by conjoined twins as a metaphor for life, I have entitled it ‘Joint Account’. Twins are a constant source of fascination to us ‘singletons’ but when they are born conjoined it raises intrigue to a much higher level. My creation of wax sculptures is an attempt to illustrate the natural connections and divisions of life’s complications.
My scientific advisor on this occasion has been the Evolutionary Developmental scientist Dr. Armand Leroi (Imperial College) who was responsible for the Channel 4 programme ‘Mutants’ and who is the author of the book of the same name. He has made a contribution to the exhibition catalogue in the form of an essay. Other contributors are; Dr. Tessa Adams (Goldsmith’s College) has written an analysis of the psychology behind ‘Joint Account’ and Dr. Ken Arnold (Wellcome Trust) wrote the forward.
‘Joint Account’ finished at the Old Operating Theatre on 9th April 2007.
